The history of the spas in Abano and Montegrotto
The effectiveness of the treatments, combined with the beautiful countryside in the area, appeared to the ancient people of the Veneto to be proof of the presence of God. In the pre-Roman era, many springs of hot and cold water rose naturally from the earth, releasing acrid odour is that had a marked effect on the population, who were bewitched by them.
With the arrival of the Romans, the area was dedicated to the worship of the God Aponus and became one of the most important places for treatment and relaxation in the Empire, earning the name Aquae Patavinae, the waters of Padua. Some remains of the history can still be found, thanks to work by the University of Padua, and now part of a major project, the Euganean Spa Towns Archaeological Park.
The University of Padua has also created the museum of spa tourism.
