Castello di Valbona

Location: Lozzo Atestino

Valbona Castle was built for the defense of the territory of the Counts of Lozzo. There is no precise date for its construction, but it is known to have existed in the first half of the 13th century; in fact, it is considered a mandatory reference point for the wars that at that time pitted the Padovans, Scaligeri, Estensi, and Vicentini against each other.
The castle has an almost rectangular layout, with sides measuring about forty and twenty-five meters. It features four hexagonal towers, crowned with Ghibelline and Guelf battlements, two square towers, now without battlements, and a main square tower also without battlements, located almost at the center of the castle. The access doors are two, each accompanied by a small security door. The doors certainly used to have a drawbridge since a deep moat filled with water entirely surrounded the structure. The moat has since been filled in, but many Istrian stone balls, likely hurled against the walls mainly in the 13th and 14th centuries, were found during the works. Inside, the castle has two courtyards and maintains, despite being in good condition, all the austere and military appearance it undoubtedly had in the past.
Evidence of the Carrarese lordship's presence in the Castle can still be seen in the coats of arms featuring a cart and a crest, carved in soft stone, located above the door on the western side; the four wheels of the cart, which make up the Carrarese emblem, are to the right and still quite well preserved; on the left is the crest, somewhat corroded by time but still clearly showing the emblem consisting of a horned head of a Saracen. On the door of the opposite side, only the crest similar to the previous one remains.

Today, the scenic Valbona Castle represents one of the best-preserved fortifications in the Euganean territory, and within it, a renowned restaurant has been established where events such as weddings and large parties can be organized.
